    Personal Loan Eligibility & FAQs

How much personal loan can I get? Find answers to common questions about eligibility, CIBIL score requirements, and the approval process.

    Approval Process

How does the personal loan application get approved?

Personal loan approval is based on multiple factors: your CIBIL score (ideally 700+), income stability, existing debt obligations (FOIR), employment type, company category, and banking history. Banks verify your income through salary slips, bank statements (6-12 months), and credit bureau reports. The entire process typically takes 24-72 hours for approval and disbursement. Most banks use automated decisioning systems that check 50+ parameters before approving your loan.

    Approval Process

Does the eligibility amount shown guarantee loan approval?

The eligibility shown is an indicative estimate based on your income and stated details. Actual approval depends on additional factors verified during processing: CIBIL score and report details, bank statement analysis, employment verification, company category, existing loans not disclosed, and income documentation. However, our estimates are conservative, so most applicants qualify for the shown amount or close to it. About 85% of our applicants get approved for the indicated amount.

    Approval Process

Why does your calculator show only 70% of my income for loan eligibility?

We use 70% of your net income as a conservative estimate because: (1) Banks typically consider only 70-80% of gross salary after accounting for statutory deductions like PF, PT, and TDS, (2) It provides a realistic eligibility figure rather than an inflated one, (3) It accounts for the FOIR limit where banks cap total EMIs at 50-60% of income. This ensures the amount shown is actually achievable and you're not disappointed during final approval.

    Approval Process

Can I get a personal loan if I'm newly employed (less than 1 year)?

Yes, but options are limited. Most banks require minimum 1-2 years of total work experience and 6-12 months in the current job. However, some NBFCs and fintech lenders approve loans with 6+ months of experience. Factors like salary amount, company reputation (MNC/Listed company), educational background, and credit history help strengthen such applications. We can connect you with lenders who specialize in financing young professionals.

    Banking History

Can I get a loan if I have recent bounces in my bank account?

Recent bounces can impact your loan approval, but it's not an automatic rejection. Banks consider the frequency, recency, and reason for bounces. 1-2 bounces in the last 3-6 months may still allow approval with some lenders, though at potentially higher interest rates. More than 3 recent bounces significantly reduce approval chances. EMI bounces are viewed more seriously than other bounces. We work with multiple banks and can help find options even with some bounce history.

    Banking History

What if I have an overdue credit card or loan? Can I still apply?

Active overdues make approval very difficult. If you have current overdue amounts, we recommend clearing them first before applying. However, if you had overdues in the past that are now closed, banks look at how long ago they were resolved. Accounts settled more than 12-24 months ago have less impact. Some NBFCs specialize in lending to customers with past credit issues at slightly higher rates.

    CIBIL Score

How does loan consolidation reflect in my CIBIL score?

Initially, you may see a small dip (10-20 points) due to the new loan inquiry and account opening. However, consolidation typically improves your CIBIL over time because: (1) Your credit utilization ratio decreases significantly when credit cards are paid off, (2) On-time EMI payments build positive history month after month, (3) Having one loan instead of multiple shows better credit management. Within 3-6 months of regular payments, most customers see improved scores by 30-50 points.

    CIBIL Score

Will my CIBIL score be impacted negatively if I consolidate my loans?

No, consolidation doesn't negatively impact CIBIL when done correctly. The key is to continue paying EMIs on time and avoid running up credit card balances again after payoff. Your credit mix improves, utilization drops dramatically (a major factor in CIBIL scoring), and payment history strengthens. The only temporary impact is the hard inquiry for the new loan application, which recovers within 2-3 months.

    CIBIL Score

What is the minimum CIBIL score required for a personal loan?

Most banks prefer a CIBIL score of 700+ for personal loans. Here's a general breakdown: 750+: Best rates, instant approval, maximum loan amount. 700-749: Good approval chances, competitive rates. 650-699: Limited options, higher interest rates. Below 650: Very few options, may need secured loans or guarantor. However, income, company category, and overall profile can sometimes compensate for a lower score.

    Debt Consolidation

How many loans can be consolidated into a single personal loan?

There's no fixed limit on how many loans can be consolidated. You can combine multiple credit cards (5-10 cards is common), personal loans, consumer durable loans, buy-now-pay-later dues, and other unsecured debts into a single personal loan. The limit depends on your overall eligibility, income, and the total debt amount. Many customers successfully consolidate 5-8 different credit obligations into one manageable EMI.

    Debt Consolidation

    Does RBI approve loan consolidation?

Yes, loan consolidation is a completely legal and RBI-compliant financial strategy. It's essentially taking a new personal loan to pay off existing debts - a practice banks encourage for responsible debt management. RBI has no restrictions on consolidating debts. In fact, RBI guidelines promote responsible lending and debt restructuring. Many banks actively market debt consolidation products as it helps customers manage finances better.

    Debt Consolidation

What is the difference between balance transfer and loan consolidation?

Balance Transfer: Moving an existing loan from one bank to another for a lower interest rate. The loan amount remains the same, you just get better terms. Loan Consolidation: Combining multiple debts (credit cards, multiple loans, EMIs) into a single new personal loan. Both save money on interest, but consolidation simplifies multiple payments into one EMI. You can also do both - consolidate multiple debts AND get a lower rate than your current loans.

    Co-Applicant & FOIR

Can I have a co-applicant to increase my loan eligibility?

Yes, adding a co-applicant (spouse, parent, or sibling) can significantly increase your loan eligibility. Banks consider the combined income of both applicants, potentially doubling your eligible loan amount. Both applicants' CIBIL scores are considered, so ensure your co-applicant has a healthy credit profile (700+). The co-applicant becomes equally liable for loan repayment. This is especially useful when your individual income doesn't meet the requirement for your desired loan amount.

    Co-Applicant & FOIR

I'm a co-applicant on a home loan but don't pay the EMI. Will this affect my FOIR?

Most banks consider 50% of the EMI in your FOIR calculation even if you're just a co-applicant and don't pay the EMI. However, some banks can reduce or completely exclude this EMI from your FOIR if you provide proof that the primary applicant is servicing the loan. Required proof: 6-12 months of bank statements from the primary applicant's account showing EMI debits. Banks like HDFC, ICICI, and Axis have favorable policies for this situation. We guide you to the right banks based on your profile.

    Co-Applicant & FOIR

What is FOIR and how does it affect my loan eligibility?

FOIR (Fixed Obligations to Income Ratio) is the percentage of your monthly income that goes towards existing EMIs and fixed obligations. Banks typically allow a maximum FOIR of 50-60%. For example, if your income is ₹1,00,000 and existing EMIs are ₹30,000, your FOIR is 30%, leaving room for additional EMI of ₹20,000-30,000. Lower FOIR means higher loan eligibility. Credit card minimum dues are typically calculated at 5% of outstanding for FOIR, making consolidation even more beneficial.

    Documentation

What documents are required for personal loan approval?

For Salaried: (1) Identity proof (Aadhaar + PAN - mandatory), (2) Address proof (Aadhaar/Utility bill), (3) Latest 3 months salary slips, (4) Last 6 months bank statements (salary account), (5) Employment letter or latest Form 16. For Self-Employed: ITR for 2-3 years with computation, GST returns, business proof, and 12 months bank statements. Some banks offer digital loans with just Aadhaar and PAN for pre-approved customers with existing relationships.

    Documentation

How quickly can I get the loan disbursed?

Disbursement timelines vary by bank and documentation readiness: Pre-approved/existing customers: Same day to 24 hours. Salaried with complete documents: 24-48 hours. Salaried requiring employment verification: 2-5 working days. Self-employed: 5-7 working days. We help expedite the process by ensuring your documents are complete upfront and connecting you with the fastest processing banks for your profile.

    Loan Terms

Can I prepay or foreclose my personal loan early?

Yes, you can prepay or foreclose personal loans anytime. As per RBI guidelines, banks cannot charge prepayment penalty on floating rate loans. For fixed-rate personal loans, banks may charge 2-5% of the outstanding amount as foreclosure charges. Some banks like HDFC and ICICI offer zero foreclosure after 12 EMIs. Early repayment saves significant interest - prepaying a 5-year loan in 3 years can save 30-40% of total interest. We recommend loans with zero or low foreclosure charges for flexibility.

    Loan Terms

Is it better to have a longer tenure to reduce EMI or shorter tenure to save interest?

It depends on your financial goals and cash flow. Longer tenure (48-60 months): Lower EMI, better monthly cash flow, but 40-50% higher total interest payment. Shorter tenure (12-24 months): Higher EMI requiring discipline, but significant interest savings (can save 30-40% of total interest). Our recommendation: Choose the shortest tenure where EMI is comfortably affordable - ideally within 40% of your surplus income after expenses. You can always prepay later if you get extra funds.

    Loan Terms

What happens if I miss an EMI payment?

Missing an EMI payment has several consequences: (1) Late payment fee: Usually ₹500-1000 or 2-3% of EMI, whichever is higher. (2) Penal interest: Additional 2-3% p.a. on the overdue amount. (3) CIBIL impact: Reported as 'Days Past Due' after 30+ days, significantly hurting your score. (4) Multiple defaults: Can lead to loan recall, legal notices, and recovery action. If you anticipate difficulty, contact the bank proactively for EMI restructuring. Always set up auto-debit from salary account to avoid missed payments.

    Interest Rates

What interest rates can I expect on a personal loan?

Personal loan interest rates in India currently range from 10.25% to 24% p.a. depending on your profile: Excellent profile (CIBIL 750+, top company, high income): 10.25-12% p.a. Good profile (CIBIL 700+, reputed company): 12-15% p.a. Average profile (CIBIL 650-700): 15-18% p.a. Higher risk profiles: 18-24% p.a. Through Unyfy, many customers get rates 0.5-1% lower than if they walked into the bank directly, thanks to our pre-negotiated partnerships.

    Interest Rates

Are personal loan interest rates fixed or floating?

Most personal loans in India have fixed interest rates - meaning your EMI remains the same throughout the loan tenure. This provides predictability for budgeting. Some banks offer floating rate personal loans linked to RLLR/EBLR that may change with RBI repo rate changes. Fixed rates are generally preferred for personal loans as they're typically for shorter tenures (1-5 years) and you know exactly what you'll pay each month.

    Fees & Charges

What are the typical processing fees for personal loans?

Processing fees typically range from 1-3% of the loan amount (plus GST). For example, on a ₹10 lakh loan, expect ₹10,000-30,000 as processing fee. Some banks offer zero processing fee promotions, especially for existing customers or during festive seasons. The fee is usually deducted from the loan amount at disbursement. We always disclose all fees upfront before you commit to any loan, so there are no surprises.

    Fees & Charges

Are there any hidden charges I should know about?

Legitimate charges you should be aware of: (1) Processing fee: 1-3% + GST, (2) Stamp duty: ₹100-500 depending on state, (3) Insurance: Often optional but banks may push it, (4) Late payment fee: ₹500-1000 per instance, (5) Bounce charges: ₹300-750 per bounce, (6) Foreclosure charges: 0-5% depending on loan type. We always get you a complete fee breakdown before you accept any offer. Avoid any lender asking for upfront fees before approval - that's a red flag.

    Loan Terms

Can I take a top-up loan on my existing personal loan?

Yes, most banks offer top-up loans after you've paid 6-12 EMIs on time. Top-up amount depends on your repayment track record, income growth, and remaining tenure. Some banks offer top-up at the same or lower interest rate than your original loan. Top-up is often faster (same-day approval) since the bank already has your documents and knows your repayment behavior.

    Approval Process

What if my loan application gets rejected?

Don't panic - rejection from one bank doesn't mean rejection everywhere. Common reasons for rejection include: low CIBIL score, high existing EMIs (FOIR), company not in approved list, insufficient income documentation, or recent bounces. Wait at least 30 days before applying elsewhere (multiple applications hurt your CIBIL). We can help analyze your rejection reason and match you with lenders who are more likely to approve your profile.

    Documentation

Can self-employed individuals get personal loans?

Yes, but the process is slightly different. Self-employed individuals need to provide: (1) ITR for last 2-3 years (minimum ₹5 lakh annual income typically), (2) GST registration and returns, (3) Business proof (registration certificate, GST certificate), (4) 12 months bank statements showing regular business transactions, (5) Balance sheet and P&L if available. Interest rates for self-employed are typically 1-2% higher than salaried. Business vintage of 2+ years is usually required.
