CRED alternatives in India
CRED does three separable things: it pays credit card bills, it gives rewards for doing so, and it sells financial products alongside. It is not an expense tracker and does not claim to be. So the right alternative depends entirely on which of those three you were actually using it for - and for one of them, the answer is not another payments app.
The problem: "CRED alternative" is three different questions
Most lists answer this as though CRED were one product. People who search it usually want one of three quite different things, and giving them a payments app when they wanted clarity about their money is why the lists are unsatisfying.
- You want a free, reliable way to pay a card bill and see it reflected quickly
- You want the rewards layer, and are weighing whether it is worth the effort
- You want to understand why the bill is that large in the first place, which CRED does not answer
How much the rewards layer is really worth
Worth putting a number on rather than arguing about it. Cashback on bill payment is real but small, and it is dwarfed by anything happening on the interest side.
- Bill-payment reward value in India generally lands in the small single-digit hundreds of rupees a year for typical spending
- A credit card that does not match your spending pattern typically costs several thousand a year in rewards you never earned - the gap is an order of magnitude larger
- Revolving a balance at 36 to 42 percent annualised makes every reward programme irrelevant
- An annual fee you are not earning back is a fixed loss that no bill-payment reward covers
If you wanted the bill payment: the direct alternatives
The payment itself is a commodity, and the cheapest reliable route is usually the issuer.
- Your card issuer’s own app or net banking - fastest posting, no intermediary, no reward but no risk of a delayed credit either
- UPI to the card, where your issuer supports it - increasingly the simplest route
- Paytm, PhonePe and Google Pay all pay card bills and run their own reward mechanics
- Whichever you use, pay at least three days before the due date; posting delays are the common cause of an avoidable late fee
If you wanted to know why the bill is that big: a different tool
This is the question CRED is not built for, and it is usually the question underneath the search. Paying a bill efficiently does not tell you anything about what created it.
- Recurring charges and auto-debits you set up once and forgot are the most common single cause of a bill that surprises you
- A card mismatched to your spending means you are paying for a rewards programme you do not trigger
- Spending spread across several cards hides the total until all the bills arrive in the same week
- This is what Unyfy is built for - it reads the transactions and names the specific leaks rather than charting them
Being straight about Unyfy here
Unyfy is not a bill payment app and will not replace CRED for that. It answers the other question, and it earns money when someone moves to a better-fitting card or a cheaper loan.
- No bill payment, no rewards programme, no points
- It identifies unused subscriptions, mispriced loans and card mismatches from your own transaction data
- Card and loan recommendations are how Unyfy earns, and appear only against a specific gap in your numbers
- If all you want is to pay a bill and collect a small reward, CRED already does that and there is no reason to switch
Common questions
What is the best alternative to CRED for paying credit card bills?
Your card issuer’s own app or net banking, because payments post fastest with no intermediary. UPI to the card works where your issuer supports it. Paytm, PhonePe and Google Pay are the main third-party alternatives with their own reward mechanics. Pay at least three days before the due date whichever you use.
Is CRED an expense tracker?
No. CRED is built around credit card bill payment, rewards and financial products, and holds RBI authorisation as a payment aggregator. It shows you what you owe rather than analysing what created it. For that, you need an app that reads transactions across accounts.
Are CRED rewards worth it?
They are real but small - typically a few hundred rupees a year for ordinary spending. That is worth having if the payment is free anyway, and it is far smaller than what a mismatched credit card or a revolving balance costs you over the same year.
