Bank statement PDF password: every major Indian bank
Most Indian banks lock the statement PDF with some combination of the first four letters of your name and your date of birth. The exact combination differs by bank, and often differs between a bank account statement and a credit card statement from the same bank. The formats below are the ones that actually open the file.
The formats, bank by bank
Take the name exactly as printed on the statement, and the date of birth registered with that bank - not necessarily the one you use elsewhere.
- Axis Bank: first four letters of the name in UPPERCASE, then date and month of birth as DDMM. Rohit Singh, born 10 April: ROHI1004
- SBI Card: first four letters of the name in UPPERCASE, then DDMM. Rakesh Kumar, born 15 March: RAKU1503
- HDFC Bank: first four letters of the name in lowercase, then DDMM. Priya Sharma, born 9 January: priy0901
- Kotak Mahindra: first four letters of the name in lowercase, then DDMM
- ICICI Bank: date of birth as DDMMYYYY, with no name. Born 4 August 1991: 04081991
- Federal Bank: first four letters of the name in UPPERCASE, then DDMM
Why banks do this at all
A statement contains your account number, your balance and every transaction you made. Emailing that unprotected would be indefensible, so the file is encrypted with something you know and an interceptor probably does not.
- The password is derived from data the bank already holds, so nothing extra has to be sent to you
- It is deliberately weak against someone who knows you and strong against someone who does not
- It is not a secret worth protecting the way a banking password is - it is a lock on one document
- Never send an unlocked statement over email or chat to anyone who has not proven who they are
If the password does not work
Formats change, and they differ between a bank account statement and a credit card statement from the same bank. Work through these before assuming you are locked out.
- Check the covering email - the bank states the format in the email body, and that text is authoritative for your specific statement
- Try the name exactly as printed on the statement, not as you normally write it - middle names and initials change the first four letters
- Try both cases. Some banks accept either, some do not
- A name shorter than four letters is usually padded or truncated differently - check the covering email
- For joint accounts, it is normally the primary holder’s details
- Credit card statements and bank statements from the same bank often use different formats
Once it opens: what to actually do with it
People rarely open a statement for its own sake. They open it because they want to know something, and the statement is where the answer is.
- Sort by amount ascending - recurring charges cluster at the bottom and that is where forgotten money lives
- Mark every debit that appears in all three of your last statements. That is your committed cost
- Check the interest rate on any loan line against what banks quote today
- Look for UPI AutoPay mandates you no longer use
- Unyfy reads these statements automatically and does the above without you exporting anything
Common questions
What is the password for my bank statement PDF?
For most Indian banks it is the first four letters of your name plus your date and month of birth in DDMM format. Axis and SBI Card use uppercase, HDFC and Kotak use lowercase. ICICI is the exception and uses the full date of birth as DDMMYYYY with no name.
Why is my statement password not working?
Most often the name on the statement differs from the name you tried - a middle name or initial changes the first four letters. Case matters at some banks. And a credit card statement often uses a different format from a bank account statement at the same bank. The covering email states the correct format for that specific file.
Can I remove the password from a bank statement PDF?
Yes, once it is open you can save an unprotected copy. Think about where that copy then lives. An unlocked statement contains your account number, balance and full transaction history, so it should not sit in a downloads folder or be forwarded over chat.
