Best expense tracker apps in India: an honest comparison

There is no single best expense tracker, and any list that names one is guessing about you. The real question is which of three things you want: capture that happens without you, tracking built into your bank account, or deliberate manual logging that makes you think about each spend. Pick the category first, then the app.

The problem with every "best app" list

Most comparisons rank on feature count, which correlates with almost nothing. The app with the most features is usually the one you abandon fastest, because features are things you have to operate. What actually predicts whether you are still using a tracker in three months is how little it asks of you.

    • Feature count measures what the app can do, not what you will do
    • Ratings are dominated by first-week impressions, not by month-three retention
    • Most lists are written by people who installed each app for an afternoon
    • The category that fits you matters far more than the ranking inside it

Automatic capture: for people who will not log anything

These read your bank SMS or link to your accounts, and categorise without you. Best fit if you have abandoned tracking before.

    • Walnut - long-standing SMS-based tracking, strong automatic categorisation
    • Axio (formerly Walnut) - same lineage, now bundled with credit products
    • MoneyView - broad user base, solid automatic capture, general-purpose
    • Trade-off: SMS parsing misses cash entirely, and permissions are broad

Banking and tracking together: fewer moving parts

If your spending already runs through one account, an app that is also the bank sees everything without integration.

    • Jupiter - tracking built into the account, good category breakdowns
    • Fi - similar model, strong on rules and automated saving
    • Niyo and the IDFC FIRST app - reasonable if you already bank there
    • Trade-off: only sees the money that moves through that account

Manual by design: for people who want the friction

Logging each spend is work, and for some people the work is the point - it makes spending deliberate rather than just recorded.

    • Monefy - fast entry, clean interface, no bank access at all
    • Money Manager by Realbyte - more structure, closer to double-entry
    • Mera Kharcha and AndroMoney - simple, offline, no permissions
    • Trade-off: incomplete months are common, and an incomplete month is discouraging

    Where Unyfy sits, plainly

Unyfy is not the best choice if what you want is a clean chart of last month by category - the apps above do that well and have done for years. Unyfy is built around a different question: what are you losing that you have not noticed.

    • Reads transactions automatically, like the first group
    • Focus is recurring charges, loan pricing and credit card fit, rather than category charts
    • Answers "what should I change" more than "what did I spend"
    • If you want budgeting envelopes and detailed category rules, one of the apps above will suit you better

    Common questions

Which expense tracker app is best in India?

It depends on which of three things you want. For automatic capture with no effort, Walnut, Axio and MoneyView. For tracking built into your bank account, Jupiter, Fi or Niyo. For deliberate manual logging, Monefy or Money Manager. The category matters more than the ranking within it.

Do expense tracker apps in India read my SMS?

The automatic-capture ones typically do, because most Indian banks send transaction alerts by SMS. That means broad message permissions. Bank-native apps like Jupiter and Fi avoid this by seeing the account directly, and manual apps avoid it by not connecting to anything.

Will an expense tracker capture cash spending?

No automatic tracker can. Cash leaves no digital trail, so it has to be entered manually or accepted as a gap. For most urban Indian users this matters less than it used to, since UPI covers the majority of small transactions.

Decide first whether you want capture without effort, banking and tracking in one place, or deliberate manual logging. That choice matters more than which app you pick inside it - and the tracker you keep using beats the one that reviewed better.
