How to Choose a Credit Card in India: The 7-Step Framework

There are 80+ credit cards live in India in 2026 and the right card for you depends on five measurable things, your monthly spend, where you spend it, your fee tolerance, whether you carry a balance, and your bureau score. This is the framework Unyfy uses to compare credit cards and match you to one that pays you back instead of costing you. It applies whether you use the Unyfy comparison tool or shop directly.

Step 1: Decide your card category

Pick the category before you pick the card.

    • Cashback cards: best for everyday spends if you spend mostly online
    • Travel / miles cards: best if you fly 4+ times a year and use lounges
    • Fuel cards: best if monthly fuel spend exceeds ₹5,000
    • Shopping / co-branded cards: best when 30%+ of spend goes to one brand
    • Secured cards (against FD): best for first-time credit users building a bureau score

Step 2: Calculate the true rewards rate

Advertised rewards rates are almost always misleading. Compute the real rate as: (rupee value of rewards in a typical month) ÷ (eligible spend). A '5% cashback' card that caps at ₹500/month on ₹50,000 spend is actually a 1% card. Always read the cap and the redemption ratio (some cards give 1 reward point per ₹100 but each point is worth only ₹0.20).

Step 3: Compare the fees in rupees, not 'free for first year'

Look at year-2 onwards fees, the spend-based waiver threshold and any add-on card fees. A ₹999 + GST card that waives on ₹3 lakh annual spend is effectively free if you spend that much; otherwise it costs ₹1,179 a year and your rewards must beat that just to break even.

Step 4: Check the APR if you ever carry a balance

Credit card APR sits between 36% and 48% p.a. for revolving balances and the interest-free period (45 to 50 days) is lost the moment you carry even ₹1 of balance. If you carry balances more than twice a year, the card's APR matters more than its rewards rate. Always pay statement balance in full.

Step 5: Verify eligibility before applying

Each card application is a hard bureau enquiry. Confirm income and bureau-score thresholds before applying.

    • Entry cards: ₹20,000+ monthly income, 650+ bureau score
    • Mid-tier cards: ₹50,000+ monthly income, 720+ bureau score
    • Premium / signature cards: ₹1,50,000+ monthly income, 750+ bureau score
    • Super-premium / metal cards: ₹3,00,000+ monthly income, 780+ bureau score, often invite-only

Step 6: Check lounge, fuel surcharge, and joining bonus separately

These are real money items often hidden in the fine print.

    • Lounge access: number of free visits per quarter, domestic vs international, primary vs add-on
    • Fuel surcharge waiver: typical 1% waiver, capped at ₹100 to ₹500 per cycle
    • Joining bonus: confirm spend requirement (e.g. ₹50,000 in 60 days) and redemption rules

    Step 7: Compare on Unyfy

The Unyfy credit-card comparison tool filters by category, fee band, real rewards rate and your income/bureau profile, then shows the 3 to 5 cards that actually match, not the cards paying the highest commission. You apply only to the one you pick, so you avoid stacking hard enquiries.

Pick a credit card the way you pick a savings account: based on the rupee value you get back versus the fee you pay, not the marketing. Use the 7-step framework above on any card you are considering, or compare on Unyfy in a single view. Informational page, not financial advice; eligibility and terms are at issuer discretion.
