Why some months cost far more than others
Expensive months are almost never random. They are months when an annual charge, a fee cycle and a festival happen to overlap. Because each item is individually forgettable, the combination feels like bad luck rather than a schedule you could have written down in January.
The four things that stack
A month becomes expensive when more than one of these lands at once.
- Annual charges: insurance premiums, card annual fees, domain and software renewals, gym memberships
- Fee cycles: school and college fees, usually quarterly or half-yearly
- Festival and wedding season: Diwali, regional festivals, and the wedding months, which reliably run above baseline
- Billing overlaps: a credit card cycle that catches two large purchases, or an EMI starting while another has not ended
Build the calendar once
The whole fix is a list. It takes an hour and it holds for years, with small edits.
- Go through 12 months of statements, not 3, and note every charge that appears only once or twice
- Write each against the month it lands in
- Add known fee cycles and the festivals your household actually spends on
- You will usually find two or three months carrying most of the annual load
What to do with the heavy months
Once they are visible, the options are ordinary and effective.
- Set aside one twelfth of the annual total each month rather than absorbing it when it lands
- Move renewal dates apart where the provider allows it, so two annual charges are not in the same month
- Decide in advance whether an annual charge is worth renewing, rather than discovering it after it debits
- Time large discretionary purchases into the light months
Common questions
How do I stop annual charges from catching me out?
Review twelve months of statements rather than three, and note every charge that appears only once or twice. Those are your annual items. Set aside one twelfth of the total monthly, or move renewal dates apart so they do not stack.
