How to see and cancel every auto-debit on your account
Auto-debits run on separate systems that do not talk to each other, so there is no single screen listing all of them. UPI AutoPay is cancelled in your UPI app, NACH and ECS mandates in net banking, and card-on-file billing at the merchant. Cancelling one does not cancel the others.
Where to cancel UPI AutoPay
Each UPI app puts this somewhere slightly different, which is a large part of why people give up looking.
- Google Pay: Profile, then Autopay, then select the mandate to pause or cancel
- PhonePe: History, then Recurring, then select the subscription and cancel AutoPay
- Paytm: Balance and History, then Recurring Payments, then cancel
- BHIM: the Recurring section, then select the mandate and cancel
Where to cancel NACH and ECS mandates
These are bank-level instructions, typically used for loan EMIs, insurance premiums and SIPs. They live in net banking, not in your UPI app.
- SBI: onlinesbi.sbi, then Account, then the NACH Management section
- HDFC: Net Banking, then Payments, then NACH/ECS Mandates, then View Mandates
- ICICI: iMobile app, then Service Requests, then NACH Mandate, then View Mandates
- Axis and Kotak: Net Banking, then Payments, then Standing Instructions or Manage Mandates
What your bank is required to do
Knowing the rules matters, because the most common outcome of a failed cancellation is the customer assuming nothing can be done.
- Cancellation requests must be processed within 2 working days
- You must be notified 24 hours before every NACH or ECS debit, by SMS or email
- Cancellation must be available through digital channels - a branch visit cannot be required
- Disputes after cancellation must be resolved within 7 working days under NPCI rules, and can be escalated to the RBI Complaint Management System
A mandate that will not cancel
This happens, and there is a defined path rather than a dead end.
- Try the merchant first - many mandates can only be stopped at source
- If the app fails, raise it with your bank in writing with the account number and mandate reference
- Keep the acknowledgement; it starts the 2 working day clock
- If a debit lands after that, file with the bank, then escalate to the RBI Complaint Management System if unresolved in 7 working days
Common questions
Can I see all my UPI AutoPay mandates in one place?
Only per app. If you have mandates set up through Google Pay and PhonePe, you have to check each separately. There is no consolidated national view for consumers, which is the main reason auto-debits get forgotten.
Does cancelling the mandate cancel the subscription?
No. Revoking the mandate stops the payment, but the merchant may still consider the subscription active and may pursue the dues or suspend service. Cancel at the merchant first, then revoke the mandate.
What if money is debited after I cancelled?
Raise it with your bank in writing, quoting the mandate reference. NPCI rules require resolution within 7 working days. If it is not resolved, escalate through the RBI Complaint Management System.
