Money Clarity

How to track your UPI spending

UPI removed the friction from small payments, and with it the memory. A hundred rupees here and eighty there leaves no impression, but forty of them a month is real money. Your bank statement shows every one, which is the problem - a wall of similar-looking entries is not information.

Why UPI spending is uniquely hard to see

Cash had a natural brake: you watched it leave your wallet. Cards had statements you reviewed monthly. UPI has neither. The payment takes two seconds, the confirmation disappears, and the entry lands in a statement among hundreds of others with a merchant name that is often unrecognisable.

    • No physical sensation of spending, so no memory forms
    • Merchant names in statements are frequently codes rather than brands
    • Payments split across several UPI apps, each with its own history
    • Small amounts feel individually irrelevant and collectively are not

    How much runs through it

For most urban Indian households UPI now carries the majority of day-to-day spending by transaction count, even where cards carry more by value. That means the category you can see least clearly is the one you use most.

    • Quick commerce, food delivery and cabs cluster heavily in UPI
    • Peer-to-peer transfers mix with merchant payments in the same list
    • UPI AutoPay mandates add recurring charges that never prompt a decision
    • Autopay revocations alone run at roughly 20 million a month nationally, mostly on low balances

What it costs to not see it

Invisible spending is not neutral spending. It is the category where correction is easiest and least painful, precisely because most of it was never a considered decision.

    • Delivery and quick commerce spend is routinely underestimated by a wide margin
    • Recurring UPI mandates keep debiting long after the service stopped being used
    • You cannot tell a heavy month from a normal one, so nothing prompts a change
    • Money that leaves without a decision cannot be redirected by a budget

    How to actually see it

Three levels, in increasing order of effort and usefulness.

    • Quickest: open each UPI app’s transaction history and read the last 30 days. Painful but revealing
    • Better: export a bank statement as CSV, filter for UPI, and sort by merchant to group repeat spending
    • Best: automatic capture that normalises merchant names, so twelve payments to the same coded merchant show as one line
    • Check active AutoPay mandates in every UPI app you use - they are listed per app, not centrally

What to look for once you can see it

The point of the exercise is not the chart. It is the three or four lines that surprise you.

    • Repeat merchants: the same name appearing 15 or 20 times in a month
    • AutoPay mandates for services you no longer use
    • Days of the week or times of day that cluster - usually late evening delivery
    • Peer transfers that are actually shared expenses you never reclaimed

    Common questions

How can I see all my UPI transactions in one place?

Your bank statement is the only complete record, because every UPI payment settles through your account regardless of which app initiated it. Individual app histories show only what went through that app. Export the statement as CSV and filter for UPI entries.

Why do UPI merchant names look like codes?

The name in your statement comes from the merchant’s payment setup, not from their brand. Small merchants and aggregators often pass through a registered entity name or a terminal code. Grouping by that string still works for spotting repeats, even when the name means nothing to you.

How do I stop a recurring UPI payment?

Cancel it at the merchant first, then revoke the AutoPay mandate in whichever UPI app created it - mandates are listed per app, not centrally. Banks must process mandate cancellations within 2 working days.

UPI is not the problem; invisibility is. Group your payments by merchant rather than reading them chronologically, and the three or four lines worth acting on separate themselves from the noise immediately.
