Loan Comparison

HDFC vs ICICI personal loan: compare your quote, not the floor

Search for HDFC vs ICICI personal loan and you are asking which bank is cheaper. The two banks' own websites give an awkward answer: as fetched on 29 September 2026, both publish the same starting rate, 9.99 percent. The floor settles nothing. What decides your cost is where each bank places you inside its range, and on ₹5 lakh over 48 months the distance from the floor to the ceiling of ICICI Bank's published range is ₹77,741 of interest. No gap between the two banks' headline numbers comes near that.

So the useful comparison is quote against quote, for one borrower: the rate each bank actually offers your profile, the processing fee that comes off before the money arrives, and what it costs to leave early. On the last two, the terms the banks publish do differ, and the difference can be priced.

Below: what each bank states on its own site and what could not be fetched, the ₹5 lakh loan priced at the low, middle and high end, the rate on the cash you actually receive, what moves you within a range, how exit terms settle a close call, and how to check both banks while applying to only one.

HDFC vs ICICI personal loan: what each bank publishes

    The technique

Read the bank's own page, and date it

Copied rate tables go stale within a quarter, and one bank can carry two figures on two of its own pages. A bank fact is only as good as the page and day it was read from, and the Key Facts Statement on your own offer outranks both.

ICICI Bank's personal loan interest rates page, https://www.icici.bank.in/personal-banking/loans/personal-loan/personal-loan-interest-rates, as published on 29 September 2026, gives a range of 9.99 to 16.50 percent a year, built as its one-year MCLR of 8.40 percent plus a spread of 1.59 to 8.10 percent. It lists processing charges of up to 2 percent plus taxes, and a prepayment or foreclosure charge of 3 percent of the outstanding principal, nil after 24 EMIs are paid. ICICI's product page, https://www.icici.bank.in/personal-banking/loans/personal-loan, fetched the same day, gives loans from ₹50,000 to ₹50 lakh over 12 to 72 months, for salaried applicants aged 18 to 58 earning at least ₹30,000 a month and self-employed applicants aged at least 23, with a credit score of 750 and above preferred. It adds that foreclosure is possible after at least one EMI.

HDFC Bank's personal loan page, https://www.hdfc.bank.in/personal-loan, as published on 29 September 2026, offers up to ₹50 lakh at a rate starting from 9.99 percent. Its rates-and-charges page, https://www.hdfc.bank.in/personal-loan/interest-rates-and-charges, did not return its rate ceiling, processing fee or foreclosure schedule when fetched that day, so this page does not state them. On exits, HDFC's sample personal loan agreement, https://v.hdfc.bank.in/content/dam/hdfc-aem-microsites/common-pdfs/pdf/PL_Agreement.pdf, as published on the same date, says prepayment is not allowed within twelve months of disbursement and before twelve EMIs are paid, that only the entire outstanding can be prepaid, not a part, and that the charge is as stated in the schedule. Meanwhile an HDFC XpressWay offer page, https://v.hdfc.bank.in/xpressway/personal_loan.html, advertises zero foreclosure charges on a limited-period offer. One bank, two exit stories: the one that binds you is the one printed in your own Key Facts Statement.

    • For HDFC, get the rate ceiling and the fee in writing before comparing anything

HDFC ICICI personal loan comparison on ₹5 lakh

Take ₹5,00,000 over 48 months, reducing balance, at the low, middle and high end of ICICI Bank's published range, with the processing fee at its published cap of 2 percent plus GST, taken here at 18 percent: ₹11,800. The floor row applies to HDFC Bank too, because an EMI depends on the rate, not on the lender's name. Above the floor, read each row as the price of whatever rate HDFC quotes you, with HDFC's own fee in place of ₹11,800.

Reducing-balance EMI, all 48 EMIs paid. Fee at 2 percent plus 18 percent GST, deducted before disbursal, so ₹4,88,200 reaches you. 13.245 percent is the midpoint of ICICI's published range, not a quoted rate. Your sanctioned rate and fee govern.
    • Floor to ceiling is ₹1,620 a month and ₹77,741 over four years. At the ceiling, interest comes to 37.3 percent of the amount borrowed; at the floor, 21.7 percent
    • The midpoint sits almost exactly halfway in rupees as well: ₹38,195 above the floor and ₹39,546 below the ceiling. On this loan a point of rate costs about the same wherever in the range it falls
    • The fee is the same ₹11,800 on every row, so here it does not change the order. It changes the order only when two quotes carry different fees, which is the next section

The rate on the cash you actually receive

    The technique

    Rate on cash received

The EMI is worked out on the full ₹5,00,000, but the fee is deducted first, so you repay ₹5 lakh having been handed less. The quoted rate is a rate on money you never fully got. Solving for the rate that turns the cash received into the same 48 EMIs puts the fee inside the rate, where two offers can finally be compared on one number.

At the floor with no fee, a ₹5 lakh loan costs 9.99 percent. With a 1 percent fee plus GST, ₹5,900 comes off and ₹4,94,100 arrives; 48 EMIs of ₹12,679 against that cash are a rate of 10.62 percent. At the 2 percent cap, ₹4,88,200 arrives and the rate is 11.26 percent. Across the range, each percent of fee adds about two thirds of a point on a four-year loan.

The rate that reproduces the ₹13,475 EMI over 48 months on the cash received. In a spreadsheet: RATE(48, -13475, 488200) multiplied by 12.

    • A fee is worth about half a point of rate over 48 months. On ₹5 lakh at a 12 percent base, half a point adds ₹5,908 of interest, and a 1 percent fee with GST is ₹5,900. Over a shorter tenure the fee weighs more, because the same rupees are spread over fewer months
    • The rate on cash received is what the annual percentage rate on a Key Facts Statement is meant to capture. Once you hold both offers in writing, compare that line, not the headline rate

What moves you within each bank's range

    The technique

The range is a list of borrowers, not of prices

A published range is the spread of prices a bank charges different people. You do not choose a point in it; the bank places you in it, using what it knows about your repayment record, your employer and your money. Most of those inputs can be seen in advance, and some can be changed before you apply.

ICICI Bank's own interest-rate FAQ, https://www.icici.bank.in/personal-banking/loans/personal-loan/personal-loan-interest-rates/personal-loan-interest-rates-faqs, as published on 29 September 2026, lists what its rate depends on: credit score, income level, employer category, existing liabilities, age, relationship with the bank, loan amount, tenure and FOIR. Its rates page adds segment, asset category and location. HDFC's pages did not return an equivalent list when fetched, but these are the inputs lenders generally price on, and four of them do most of the work.

What a step is worth on ₹5 lakh over 48 months, from a 12 percent base: a quarter point is ₹61 a month and ₹2,950 over the loan, half a point ₹123 a month and ₹5,908, a full point ₹247 a month and ₹11,848.

    • Credit score and what sits behind it. ICICI names 750 and above as preferred, but the number matters less than the lines under it: a settled account, a recent missed EMI or several enquiries in one month will price you up at either bank, whatever the score says
    • Employer category. ICICI lists it as a factor, and lenders generally grade employers. A salaried applicant at a listed company or a government body starts nearer the floor than someone on the same income at a small firm the bank has never seen
    • A salary account with that bank. The bank sees your credits month by month, so it needs less proof and prices less risk. This is the most dependable reason to get one bank's quote first; the private vs public bank page shows why it outweighs ownership
    • Existing relationship and pre-approved offers. A pre-approved offer in net banking or the app was priced before you asked. It often beats anything else that bank will offer you, and it is still a quote, not the floor

HDFC or ICICI: which is better for your profile

    The technique

    Same borrower, two quotes

Published ranges describe each bank's whole customer base. The comparison that answers the question for you is between the offers made to you, and those can land in either order depending on where your salary sits and how each bank grades your employer.

One salaried borrower wants ₹5 lakh over 48 months. Four illustrative quotes, none a real quote from either bank, show how the answer moves. Q1 comes from whichever bank holds the salary account, as a pre-approved offer. Q2 and Q3 are two possible replies from the other bank. Q4 is what the same person might be quoted as a walk-in with no relationship at all.

Quote (illustrative)Rate + feeEMIInterestFee with GSTTotal costOn cash received

₹5,00,000 over 48 months, reducing balance, all EMIs paid, fee plus 18 percent GST deducted at disbursal. Rates and fees are illustrative, not quotes from HDFC Bank or ICICI Bank.
    • Against Q2, the salary bank's offer wins by ₹14,653. Three quarters of a point of rate and a full point of fee both go its way
    • Against Q3, it wins by only ₹2,877, and Q3's EMI is just ₹122 higher while its fee is ₹2,950 lower. A contest this close is decided by the exit terms, not the price
    • The walk-in quote costs ₹44,352 more than Q1, about three times what the choice between the two banks moved in the worst case here. Which bank matters less than arriving as a customer the bank already knows
    • So the honest answer to which is better: the one that offers your profile the lower all-in cost. Get both numbers in writing, then apply to one

Foreclosure: exit terms decide close calls

    The technique

Price the exit at the month you expect to leave

A bonus, a maturity or a cheaper loan closes many personal loans early. The fee was paid on day one and the rate works month by month, but a foreclosure charge falls on the balance still owed, which is largest early. The two banks' published exit terms differ most in exactly those first two years.

At ICICI Bank, closing before 24 EMIs costs 3 percent of the outstanding principal, and ICICI's rates page says GST may be charged on it. At the 13.245 percent midpoint, here is what closing the ₹5 lakh loan costs and saves at different months.

At HDFC Bank the charge itself could not be fetched, and the sample agreement puts a floor under the exit: no prepayment before twelve EMIs, and only in full. Under exceptional circumstances it lets a borrower close earlier by paying the residual interest in the first twelve EMIs; read that way, closing after six EMIs at 9.99 percent means paying ₹21,239, the interest in EMIs seven to twelve. After twelve EMIs, whatever percentage your schedule states, each 1 percent of charge with GST costs ₹4,637 on the ₹3,92,992 still owed at 9.99 percent, and ₹3,957 on the ₹3,35,360 left after eighteen.

    18 EMIs₹3,42,534₹12,126₹61,705₹49,579
    23 EMIs₹2,92,983₹10,372₹43,883₹33,511
    24 EMIs₹2,82,742₹0₹40,649₹40,649
₹5,00,000, 48 months, 13.245 percent. ICICI's published charge of 3 percent of outstanding principal, nil after 24 EMIs, with GST taken at 18 percent. Interest avoided is the interest the remaining EMIs would have carried.
    • Waiting for ICICI's charge to lapse is not automatically cheaper. With the cash in hand after 18 EMIs, closing costs ₹12,126, while carrying the loan six more months to reach 24 costs ₹21,056 in interest. Closing now wins by ₹8,930
    • After 23 EMIs it flips. The charge is ₹10,372 and the 24th EMI carries only ₹3,234 of interest, so paying one more EMI and closing then keeps ₹7,138
    • Part-payment is where the documents are least clear. HDFC's sample agreement rules it out; the ICICI pages fetched did not describe it. If a bonus is part of your plan, ask each bank for its part-payment terms in writing
    • Go back to Q1 against Q3, ₹2,877 apart over four years. One early exit at a 3 percent charge moves more money than that, so between two close quotes, pick the one whose exit terms match when you expect to leave

Check both banks, then apply to one

    The technique

Quotes are free; applications are not

A pre-approved offer or a written quote costs nothing. A formal application usually puts a hard enquiry on your credit report, and two in the same week read as a borrower shopping under pressure. The order matters: collect offers first, then apply to the one that wins.

Start with the bank that holds your salary: log in and look for a pre-approved offer, which states a rate and an amount without an application. Ask the other bank for a quote in writing, with the fee in rupees and its foreclosure and part-payment terms. Before either, check that the loan fits your income. ICICI's minimum for a salaried applicant is ₹30,000 a month. At that income, under an illustrative cap of 50 percent of income on all EMIs, ₹5 lakh over 48 months fits at every point in the range, but only just: the EMI takes 42.3 percent of income at the floor and 47.7 percent at the ceiling, leaving ₹701 of room.

Add an existing ₹5,000 EMI and the room falls to ₹10,000. The ceiling-rate EMI is then ₹4,299 over it, and the loan that fits is ₹3,49,687 at 16.50 percent or ₹3,94,356 at 9.99 percent. Tenure is the other lever: ICICI goes to 72 months, which at the midpoint cuts the EMI by ₹3,373 to ₹10,102 and adds ₹80,549 of interest.

    • If the loan does not fit, neither bank will be quick or cheap for you at this amount. A smaller loan is the honest answer, and it is better found before an application than through a rejection
    • Folding more than two offers into one figure, exit clauses included, is worked through on the compare personal loans page
    • The same method applied to two other banks is on the SBI vs Axis comparison page

How Unyfy helps with an HDFC or ICICI decision

This comparison needs three numbers you have to go and get: the rate each bank will sanction you, your credit report as a bank will read it, and the EMIs you already carry. Unyfy helps with the last two before either bank sees an application. Its loan eligibility check pulls your Equifax credit report as a soft enquiry, which does not affect the score, and shows the score with every account behind it, including any overdue, settled or written-off line an underwriter will see. It also computes a live FOIR from the loans and cards it can see in your bank and card transaction emails and, on Android, SMS, so you know whether ₹5 lakh over 48 months fits before a bank tells you. It then compares loan offers from 15+ banks and NBFCs, and only the one lender you choose to apply with runs a hard enquiry.

What you see is your score, the accounts behind it, any overdue or settled one included, and a FOIR worked out from the EMIs and card dues it has seen leave your accounts. It never asks for your bank password or UPI PIN.

If your salary bank shows a pre-approved offer in its own net banking or app, set it beside the rest; the rate each bank quotes you arrives with its offer. Install Unyfy on Android, or use the web app at app.unyfy.co.in on an iPhone.

    Common questions

HDFC vs ICICI personal loan: which is cheaper?

Neither, on published numbers. As fetched on 29 September 2026, both banks' own pages give a starting rate of 9.99 percent. ICICI publishes a ceiling of 16.50 percent; HDFC's ceiling did not return from its rates page. On ₹5 lakh over 48 months, floor to ceiling is ₹77,741 of interest, so the cheaper bank is whichever places your profile lower in its range. Get a written quote from each, with the fee in rupees, and compare total cost.

HDFC or ICICI, which is better for personal loan?

The one that offers your profile the lower all-in cost: interest, plus the processing fee with GST, plus any foreclosure charge at the month you expect to close. In the worked example, the bank holding the salary account wins by ₹14,653 against one reply from the other bank and by only ₹2,877 against another, where exit terms settle it. Check both without applying, then apply once.

What is the EMI on ₹5 lakh for 48 months at HDFC or ICICI?

It depends only on the rate you are sanctioned. At the 9.99 percent floor both banks publish, the EMI is ₹12,679 and interest is ₹1,08,587. At 13.245 percent, the midpoint of ICICI's published range, it is ₹13,475 and ₹1,46,782. At ICICI's 16.50 percent ceiling it is ₹14,299 and ₹1,86,328. A processing fee of 2 percent plus GST adds ₹11,800 to any of them and is deducted before the money reaches you.

HDFC personal loan vs ICICI personal loan: what are the foreclosure charges?

ICICI Bank's rates page, as published on 29 September 2026, states 3 percent of the outstanding principal, nil after 24 EMIs, and says GST may apply. On ₹5 lakh at 13.245 percent that is ₹14,107 with GST after 12 EMIs. HDFC Bank's charge did not return from its rates page that day; its sample loan agreement allows prepayment only in full and only after twelve EMIs, with the charge as per the schedule. The charge in your Key Facts Statement is the one that applies.

Does applying to both HDFC and ICICI hurt my credit score?

A formal application usually triggers a hard enquiry, and two close together can weigh on the score and on how the second lender reads you. A pre-approved offer in your bank's net banking or app, or a written quote, involves no application. Collect both numbers that way, then apply only to the bank whose offer is cheaper all-in.

Does a salary account with HDFC or ICICI get a lower rate?

Often. ICICI's own FAQ lists relationship with the bank and employer category among the things that set its rate. The bank that sees your salary every month has less to verify and prices less risk, and a pre-approved offer there was priced before you asked. In the worked example, the salary bank's quote beats a walk-in quote by ₹44,352 over four years. Still get the other bank's quote: it can land within a few thousand rupees.

On ₹5 lakh over 48 months, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank start at the same 9.99 percent, and the gap between that floor and the ceiling of ICICI's published range is ₹77,741 of interest. That range, not the bank, is the comparison. Get each bank's quote for your profile, put the fee inside the rate, price the exit at the month you expect to leave, and apply to the one with the lower all-in cost. Informational page, not financial advice. Bank facts are as published on each bank's own site on 29 September 2026 and change without notice; the quotes and fees in the worked examples are illustrative. Rates, fees, foreclosure terms and eligibility are set by each bank for each applicant — your sanction letter and Key Facts Statement govern, not this page.
